‘The Religious Roots of Populism’

“Since the French Revolution Western politics has revolved around the left-right divide. With Brexit, Trump and the run-off between Macron and Le Pen in France, we are seeing a shift away from this old opposition towards a new polarity between liberals and anti-liberals. In one sense, this marks a revulsion against secular liberalism and its attack on traditions and practices rooted in Christianity and other faiths. But in another sense, some populist revolts are driven by forces that apply religion to advance a counter-modernity which is just as secular as the liberalism it opposes precisely because it appeals to the unmediated will of The People and related concepts originating from modern secularism”

Dr Adrian Pabst is a Reader in Politics at the University of Kent and an exciting emerging voice on the place of religion and ethics in global politics. His most recent book is The Politics of Virtue (co-authored with John Milbank).

Scholarship at the Cathedral is an initiative of the Sydney Archdiocese, offering a series of public lectures with eminent intellectuals, both Australian and international.

The University of Notre Dame Australia’s Religion and Global Society (RGS) is a key research area of the Institute for Ethics and Society (IES).The RGS focus area examines the dynamics of world politics through the actors, interests, ideas and traditions of religion. The study of religion and politics is one of the fastest growing areas of research in the humanities and social sciences. The RGS focus area brings the particularities of the faith tradition that exists at the heart of Notre Dame’s ethos into direct research engagement with the field of international affairs.

The IES is proud to host this year’s Religion and Global Society lecture in partnership with The Sydney Archdiocese’s Scholarship at the Cathedral event.
