Is your child musically inclined or simply loves to sing? St Mary’s Cathedral Choir, Australia’s oldest continuous musical institution, offers a remarkable opportunity for children to grow musically, spiritually, and academically within a world-class choral tradition.

As a Chorister, your child becomes part of a living heritage of sacred music, singing Gregorian Chant, Renaissance polyphony, and contemporary liturgical repertoire in the stunning setting of St Mary’s Cathedral.


Who Can Become a Chorister?

  • Children join the Choir in Year 3.
  • No prior musical training is required.
  • Qualities we look for: Enthusiasm, musical interest, focus, responsibility, and a willingness to learn.

What Does Chorister Life Involve?

Weekly Schedule

Joining the Choir is a significant but deeply rewarding commitment. Choristers take part in:

  • Morning rehearsals before school
  • Two weekday evening rehearsals and Masses
  • Sunday rehearsal and Mass or rehearsal and Vespers, depending on the schedule.

Musical Education

Every Chorister receives:

  • Weekly individual vocal tuition
  • Weekly piano lessons

These develop strong musicianship, confidence, and a solid technical foundation.

Schooling at the Cathedral College

All Choristers attend St Mary’s Cathedral College, the Cathedral’s choir school. Choristers receive a full tuition scholarship, ensuring that this exceptional experience is accessible to families from across Sydney.

How to Apply

A voice trial includes:

  • Singing a familiar hymn or song
  • Simple pitch and listening exercises
  • An informal conversation with the Director of Music

No previous musical lessons are required.
