Notice: Cathedral Upgrade Works (From March 2027)

From March 2027 onwards, St Mary’s Cathedral will be carrying out major upgrade works in and around the cathedral.

Due to the nature of these works, certain areas of the cathedral—both inside and outside—may be temporarily impacted or closed. Some entrance doors may be inaccessible due to scaffolding and/or hoarding, and access to facilities may be limited at times.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this period as we work to improve the cathedral.

St Mary’s Cathedral stands on the site of the first Catholic Chapel in Australia

The Cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians.

Architect William Wilkinson Wardell was commissioned by Archbishop Polding to design a new St Mary’s following the fire of 1865 which ruined the original Cathedral.

St Mary’s Cathedral Music Department

For more than 200 years, the Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral has stood at the heart of Australia’s musical and liturgical life. As Australia’s oldest musical institution, it maintains the Cathedral’s daily sung worship and is uniquely supported by a dedicated Choir School offering fully funded scholarships to Choristers.
