St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney

This year’s Carols at the Cathedral celebrates Christmas with the music of seventeenth‑century Germany, by Michael Praetorius and Hieronymus Praetorius.

St Mary’s Cathedral Choir, the Cathedral Scholars and St Mary’s Singers are joined by Sinfonia Australis on period instruments, with cornetts, sackbuts, natural trumpets and timpani, filling the Cathedral with music written for choirs answering one another across a great church.

The programme includes Hieronymus Praetorius’s Magnificat quinti toni, with its interwoven carols Joseph lieber, Joseph mein and In dulci jubilo, and Michael Praetorius’s festive Puer natus in Bethlehem, Vom Himmel hoch, Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern and In dulci jubilo for trumpets and timpani. The concert also includes Scripture readings, a homily by the Archbishop of Sydney, and favourite carols for everyone to sing, including Once in Royal David’s City, O Little Town of Bethlehem and O Come, All Ye Faithful.

The concert runs for approximately one hour.
