Funerals

Funerals

In the face of death, the Church confidently proclaims that God has created each person for eternal life and that Jesus, the Son of God, by his death and resurrection has broken the chains of sin and death that bound humanity.

Catholic Funerals express the special character of Christian death in hope of the resurrection. They also manifest the meaning of communion with the departed particularly through prayer for the purification of their souls.

Funerals are held at St Mary’s Cathedral for deceased members of the Cathedral parish.

In keeping with the nature of a Catholic Cathedral, such Funerals are carried out according to the approved liturgical books and such things as pre-recorded music are not permitted. The Cathedral is not a suitable venue for non-liturgical Funerals.

Please note we do not hold funerals on weekends.

All requests are reviewed and are not confirmed until approved by the Dean of the Cathedral in writing.

Please read the Guidelines for Funerals in St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney.
