Baptisms

Baptisms

Congratulations on deciding to have your child baptised into the Catholic Church.

The essential rite of this sacrament consists in immersing the candidate in water or pouring water over his or her head while invoking the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Everyone who is to be baptised is required to make a profession of faith. This is done personally in the case of an adult or by the parents and by the Church in the case of infants.

People normally receive Baptism in the Parish where they live. However, requests may be made for baptism at St Mary’s Cathedral. Baptism of those who do not live within the Cathedral Parish requires permission of the Parish Priest of their place of residence.

Baptisms are held in the Baptistry on Sundays and currently at 1:30pm or 2pm and 3pm and an applicant needs to have their own Priest celebrant. A donation to the Cathedral is optional. Your Priest is paid separately.

Please read the Guidelines for the Sacrament of Baptism in St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney.
